Welcome to Y1/2
In Year 1, we build on all that was learnt in EYFS. It is a year of transition from child initiated learning to a more formal approach which is needed in KS1 and KS 2.
We provide an exciting curriculum, which introduces children to new National Curriculum subjects: History, Geography, Science, Physical Education, Religious Education, PSHE, Art, Music and Computing.
The children will become confident in number and place value in mathematics. They will also learn the names and properties of 2D and 3D shapes; to understand half and quarter of an object and a number; to represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20 and to add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including 0. The children will be confident in measuring and solving practical problems.
Within Year 2, we build upon this as we begin to introduce formal methods for recording the children’s increasingly complex calculations in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We also look at fractions of shapes and numbers and investigate properties of shapes.
In Year 1 in English, we explore different genres and become competent in writing stories, instructions and non-chronological reports. The children develop into fluent readers with the confidence to talk about the characters, the events and the author’s choice of language.
As a Year 2 child, we continue with our passion for writing and reading but we also introduce spelling and grammar lessons. This allows for specific rules and techniques to be taught which will enable more independence in the children’s writing.
In Year1/2, we are proud of our creativity in all areas of the curriculum as we make learning exciting and fun.
Please see our curriculum map for the topics we will be covering this academic year.
Mrs Brown and Mrs Craig pride themselves on the children’s independence, growth in confidence and ability to work as a team.
